What NSF/ANSI 42 covers — and what it does not.
NSF/ANSI 42 certifies aesthetic performance: reduction of chlorine taste and odor, and of particulate matter. It is not a health-effects certification. Health-related contaminant reduction — lead, PFAS, arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, cysts — is covered by NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) and NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis systems). Where we claim reduction of a specific health-related contaminant for a specific model, we state the standard and the model that was tested, and we do not extend an NSF/ANSI 42 certification to health claims.
